Perhaps the most prominent post WW II Bouvier in the Belgian ring was Eddy Ten Grootenhuysen's Itarsan, competing in the Ring finals several times in the early 1960s. Itarsan was on the sire side of the pedigree out of dogs from the de la Gendarmerie line of Ferdinand Nijs. This old style working kennel, located at Deinze in West Flandres near Ghent, does not seem to have survived WW II, but remnants apparently persisted. The dam was out of old style Dutch working lines with kennel names such as Baakenstein. This seems to have marked the end of an era, for as Eddy commented to me, he simply could not find a competitive successor. Eddy went on to be a prominent canine journalist and activist; two lengthy pamphlets on the history of Belgian Ring (in Dutch) are included on my web site.
